While the use of CFD allows for rapid-prototyping and the generation of useful visualisation data in design, it plays an important role in providing our clients with a tailor-made service for problem rectification. In these types of projects it is often expensive, time consuming or impossible to employ more traditional techniques such as experimentation.

An example of problem rectification problems solved using CFD techniques at SafetyatSea have been:

  • The solution of short fatigue-life rudder for a single-screw container vessel
  • Vortex Induced Vibration (VIV) for a stabilisation fin
  • Bow slamming on a large-flare Ro-Pax vessel
  • Noxious smells on a funnel
  • Wash reduction on a Ro-pax vessel operating in a sensitive area

The power of CFD to reproduce the problem, find solutions and very the final design has been very effective in solving these problems.

SafetyatSea has used CFD to carry out a number of oil spill analyses for legal cases.
