Safety at Sea Ltd presents to the RoRo market the iStand Decision Support Software
Following the successful installation of the Decision Support System “iStand” on RCCL’s Oasis of the Seas, Safety at Sea Ltd of Glasgow is exhibiting at Stand B62 to demonstrate the software potential to enhance safe operation of RoRo vessels.
In addition to being used as a Loading computer, the software offers a number of unique features to aid design, operation, training, emergency response and decision support. These include a vulnerability assessment module (“VLog”), which monitors and updates the ability of the vessel to survive a damage, taking into account the status of all watertight doors, tanks, vessel draught and weather conditions through sensor data and / or user input. This allows the crew to understand vessel vulnerability to flooding; hence improve understanding of how best to operate the vessel to minimise consequences of a hull breech.
Another unique feature of the iStand software is the Criticality Assessment Module and Corrective Action search. In the event of a hull damage, these modules will consider information from flooding sensors (if installed), crew-supplied information and vessel attitude to assess the most likely damage and hence provide information on what the extent of damage is and how long before a decision needs to be made on evacuation. Meanwhile the corrective action search algorithm will find possible solutions for the improvement of the vessel’s stability based on how the actual situation evolves.
iStand is currently undergoing class approval through DNV and this is expected to be complete by late summer. The first implementation of the software for a RoRo vessel will be announced later this year. Safety at Sea welcome visitors to stand B62, where a working model of an example RoRo can be viewed.
Safety at Sea’s chairman Professor Dracos Vassalos will be chairing a session and will be presenting his thoughts on “Safety & Stability of RoRo vessels under the New SOLAS Rules” at 11:15 on Thursday 20 May at the RoRo Conference.

Safety at Sea Aberdeen Opens Its Doors
Safety at Sea opened its third office and second in the UK this month when it opened its Aberdeen Office. The office is situated on Riverside Drive, central to the city’s activities and within a short distance from many of the clients that it aims to serve.
The venture builds on the company’s growing interests in the offshore energy marker and aims to establish itself as a trusted name for safety related analysis and consulting as it has already done in the shipping sector. Although the company has its roots in shipping, many of its innovations in safety are readily applied to offshore challenges bringing a fresh safety engineering approaches to the industry.
Offshore regulation is changing to incorporate many of the advances in regulation in the shipping industry. Special Purpose ships carrying over 60 crew are required to follow some elements of the SOLAS passenger ship rules requiring the specialist skills Safety at Sea can offer. One of the major impacts will be ‘Safe Return to Port’; which requires the continued operation of essential systems following specified fire and flooding casualty scenarios. Applying what was conceived as a passenger based rule to offshore vessels poses new challenges, but can be done effectively provided the right tools and expertise are brought to bear.
The office is headed-up by Chris Doo who also joins the company this month. Chris’ background is in the offshore industry where he has worked since finishing his PhD at Strathclyde University in 2004.

Safety at Sea Ltd Win Glasgow Corporate Rowing Championships
Trying to persuade the employees of a stability orientated Naval Architecture consultancy to climb into an inherently unstable racing rowing shell is not entirely straightforward. However, despite the overwhelming odds of taking a swim in the murky waters of the river Clyde, SafetyatSea fielded a crew of four in the Glasgow Corporate Rowing Championships, hosted by Clydesdale Amateur Rowing Club at Glasgow Green.
Preparation for the big day comprised six training sessions, the first two of which were devoted to the fine art of not falling out of the boat, before progressing onto not going backwards and finally; rowing forwards and rowing forwards quickly.
In the early rounds of the competition the SafetyatSeacrew showed considerably greater speed than their opposition over the 300 metre course. A nervous performance in the semi-final saw the 4 guys edge their way into the final. However, the nerves evaporated in the final, and despite a strong showing from the opposing crew, Team SafetyatSea powered to a well deserved victory, taking home the British Steel Trophy.
